From first glance, Conhas looks like a western style house. And that’s what it is, at least it was. The café, in Hapjeong was converted from an old two-story house. The café that is in a quieter part of Hapjeong, not far from the Han River, is one of two cafes, with the other being in Yeonhuidong.
The café has a beautiful courtyard that you must cross to enter the café. While most of the homely characteristics had been stripped from the café, the café still has a lot of dividers, meaning that there a many different nooks and crannies to sit in. Each area has different styles of seating and tables, which made it more intimate and more suited to socialising.
The café’s interior had an industrial feel but without the open plan layout of most industrial style cafes. It’s brick walls were painted white, with some accents of grey concrete and a polished concrete floor. The ceiling had exposed wooden beams and a lot of the finished were black metal.
You could go upstairs and there was a small space for seating, but it also lead to the rooftop terrace. Since the weather was beautiful my friend and I sat on the rooftop terrace, which allowed you to look down into the garden.
Since it was night, the way that the café was lit with warm light was beautiful. The courtyard, which also had places to sit, had nice decking, and was finished off with stones and nice foliage.
The café also had a really delicious looking selection of baked goods, but since my friend and I were going to have dinner we didn’t try them.
I had a milk tea and my friend had an iced americano. My friend said the iced americano was just average. My milk tea was sweet but it had a slightly artificial and plastic taste, symptomatic of a packet power, and was therefore unpleasant.
So while the drinks were a disappointment, the atmosphere of the café was worth it. In dead beat terms, this is a café that had a nice quiet ambiance. While the drinks are hit and miss, this is a nice place to sit and relax with some good company, especially on a summer night.
