In the uncertain residential area where Seogyo, Mangwon and Hapjeong meet is a quaint café with a mini jungle out the front of it. While the small café’s simple grey façade can be a deceiving indicator of what's inside, it’s better to look to the plants for the cafe's inspiration.
The café was in an L shape with white floors, walls and ceiling. This was done in a unique way with a white tiled wall and floor, something uncommon in Korean. A lot of the furniture including the main counter, shelving and tables were black which added a nice contrast to the white. The front of the cafe from floor to ceiling were windows which let in a lot of natural light and make the space feel bigger.
Pops of colour came from modern posters scattered throughout the space, as well as large light blue velvet sofa and matching coffee table. One wall also had a large black shelving unit that broke up the white of the space. However, the focal decoration aspect of the space were plants. Different varieties of plants in various shapes and sizes were in different colored pots throughout the cafe.
This beautiful greenery scattered throughout the café popped against a white canvas. While an all-tile finish has the likelihood of looking like a bathroom, this was not the case here at all. The addition of plants and a large window gave the space a chic yet natural feeling. The space was reminiscent of the Taiwanese capital city of Taipei, with so much nature in the space, yet with a simple urban view all around.
Since the café was relatively small there were only three tables inside the café and the blue sofa to sit at too. There was also a small covered area out the front of the café that also had a few extra tables to sit at.
A friend and I visited on an unusually warm day late fall last year and wanted something refreshing. I had an iced milk tea and my friend got an iced americano. My milk tea was lovely and velvety. It had a nice strong tea flavour with a good balance of sweetness, while my friend said the americano was also well flavoured.
Fond Coffee is a lovely spot that combines chic city life with the natural. In dead beat terms, this café is very un-Seoul-like and feels like you’re in a concrete jungle where nature has been allowed to bloom. For plant lovers it’s a great spot to relax among some beautiful greenery, all the while enjoying a tasty and refreshing beverage.
