The Having: Busan, Yeongdo Island

While on a weekend trip to Busan, I visited the small island of Yeongdo. Just south of Busan station, the small island is connected to the mainland by bridge. My friend and I took a bus to the island till we reached a small café called The Having.

The Having is a very small café but doesn’t feel like that. When you enter the café you are greeted with the ordering counter made of a beautiful chestnut wood. From there you could turn around and see the entire café in one glace.

The floors and ceiling were a grey concrete and the walls were also concrete but painted in an off white. The pillars of the café and the window frames were painted black and the seating and tables were the same chestnut wood from the ordering counter. The decoration of the café was very simple; a few vintage style posters on the walls and a few plants. But rather than be boring, this allowed for the café’s biggest asset, the view to shine.

Most walls of the café had beautiful large windows that looked out onto the breath-taking view of the ocean. There was one corner of the café that that was floor to ceiling window. This opened up the space and made the café feel much larger than it actually was. Also, some of the smaller windows also gave off the feeling of paintings since the window frames were dark in contrast to the walls.

Naturally with such large windows, beautiful sunlight shone into the café giving a warmth to the space, and the view seemed to memorise the customers and gave the cafe a peaceful and healing atmosphere.

There was also a rooftop, and since the weather was beautiful, my friend and I sat there. The rooftop had many seats that went along the perimeter of the rooftop. This was the perfect spot to catch the sun setting over the sparkling ocean and mainland of Busan. From the rooftop it was also easier to see the Huinnyeol Culture Village down below, a small bunch of alleyways along the coast.

For the seating, it was mostly low tables and chairs for twos or threes. While the rooftop tables were a little higher, they didn’t have much space. This meant that the café wasn’t really suited for working. But honestly with a view so beautiful, it would be a waste to spend it working.

In terms of drinks, I got an iced strawberry latte and my friend got an iced americano. My friend said the americano was well brewed and fresh. The strawberry latte was sweet and fresh. It had a sweet handmade strawberry syrup that had little chunks of strawberry. This paired with milk was a delight to drink.

The Having is a simple and quaint café along the coast of Yeongdo Island. In dead beat terms, this is a café to visit for a peaceful beautiful view of the sea. The café is a calm and peaceful space that focuses main asset, the breathtaking ocean. If you happen to visit Yeingdi island in your travels and need a peaceful café with tasty drinks, this is one for you.
