Type Samcheong: Anguk

Back at the end of summer, my friend and I took a stroll around Seoul’s palace and gallery territory. If you take a side street off the main roads, you will see a white building with green reeds growing out the front.

Type is a medium sized cafe. It's building is a mix of old and new; one part is newly built, square and angular, while the other is of Korean traditional style, curving wood and tiles.

The building, much like other buildings in the area, mimics Korean traditional style homes, Hanok. To enter the café, you pass though a large wooden doorway and are greeted with a small open courtyard. There are two parts to the cafe; the seating and ordering parts with walkways to go between.

In the centre of the courtyard is a beautiful garden of feather reed. With a path going in the middle of this garden, it's a perfect place for photo opportunities.

The main seating part of the café is Hanok style, with huge glass windows that look out into the courtyard. The ordering area is a small minimalist style building. Though appropriate for working, the space seemed more like a place to chat with friends.

This cafe is the one of four branches in Korea. The day my friend and I went was a clear late summer day. The perfect blue sky with sun shining into the courtyard was a beautiful sight. The space also had a very quiet and calming feel to it.

Due to corona, my friend and I got take out. I got a matcha milk and my friend got an iced americano.

The matcha milk was a matcha latte. While there was the typical matcha taste, there was also another flavour element to it. This was a more earthy, grainy flavour which added a uniqueness to the drink. It also had a light sweetness which allowed for the flavours to come through more strongly. It was tasty, and my friend also said the coffee had a nice flavour.

Type is a beautiful café to visit. In it’s small space it gives a nice balance of Korean modern and traditional. In dead beat terms, this is a café where you can get tradition in a modern way. While the drinks were nice, the café’s main drawing point is it’s courtyard, which is especially nice to enjoy on a beautiful day.
