Apartment Kiroon: Dongguk Univ.

In a somewhat strange location, down a small side street near Dongguk University station and in what looks like small business complex, you will see the sign for Apartment Kiroon.

As you enter the building, you must make your way up to the second floor. The first thing you see when you enter is the foyer which is almost like a small art gallery. Then to your left you can see the large main area of the café.

The space had a very dark chic interior with natural elements. The main counter was made of grey cinder blocks with a light-coloured wooden top. Most of the other surfaces of the café were wooden, with the exception of the ceiling, which was concrete and the floor which was made of slate tiles.

In front of the ordering counter were plants and moss planted into the floor with black rocks spilling onto the tiles. There were other plants also throughout the café, which added a nice vitality to the space.

The café had a wide variety of different and unique seating. It had a number of long wooden tables, that with the combination of table lamps were reminiscent of an old library. These tables were a perfect spot for working.

There were also seats along the window, bar seats along main counter, tables with lounge like chairs, as well as two large white couches. These parts were all suitable for socalising. My friend and I sat on one of the couches and it was a good choice as they were very comfortable. There was also a large stage area that looked like it was ready to be used for performances.

As for drinks my friend and I tried the café’s signature drinks; I got the Kiroon Milk and my friend got the Kiroon Coffee. And we also shared a chocolate matcha cookie.

Both drinks had a sort of oatmeal powder in it. The Kiroon Milk was an oatmeal flavoured milk drink with cream on the top. While the Kiroon Coffee was the same, but with a shot of coffee added.

Though the oatmeal powder was present, it didn’t bother me as it had a smooth velvety texture. Only at the bottom where the powder had settled was it a little chunkier. The Kiroon Milk was tasty and was a unique drink which was down to it’s oaty-ness. My friend also said the Kiroon coffee was tasty.

This café is a beautiful dark space. In dead beat terms, though relatively out of the way area of Seoul, this café is worth the trip. The café was large with a unique and chic interior. Alongside that it was a versatile space for all your chatting or working needs.
