Beonty Coffee: Beotigogae

If you get off at Beotigogae station, and walk along a main street in a typical Korean residential neighbourhood, you will come across a concrete building and stairs. If you follow the stairs upwards, you will find your way to Beonty Coffee.

Beonty Coffee is a medium sized café that is relatively open and in the shape of an L. Even from the first glance around of the cafe, the café gives off a unique feel.

While the space had key elements that gave it an on trend atmosphere, stainless steel finishes, wine and mid-century furniture, there was something else to the space. The cafe gave off the feeling of being in an old-fashioned American style diner, something unexpected but executed very well.

There were booth style seats scattered throughout the space and even a poster of a burger place. The floors were a neutral grey lino that added this diner feel. There were even thin Venetian blinds that reminded me of diner scenes from old Hollywood classics. Stainless steel, a staple in any commercial kitchen, was also a key feature in the space, with the finishes of the cabinetry and furniture in steel.

However it was the colours of these items that gave it a chic cafe atmosphere. The walls were interesting off-white color that had a slight green tinge to it. This interesting color tied with a lot of the olive greens in the cafe coming from plans, doors and chunky booth chairs. The main counter was a deep burgundy which also complemented the space well.

Alongside coffee and other beverages the cafe also sold wine, which was displayed beautifully on stainless steel shelves, and a tall stainless bar fridge. Alongside side large posters and plants, these displays also were a decorative element in the space.

I’ve been to the café both during the day and at night, but it definitely is best on a sunny afternoon. The café also had a rooftop, perfect for nice sunny days.

The cafe had a variety of tables sizes and configurations. Some where normal tables and chairs, some were booths and chairs and there were even steel benches and lower tables. However, most of the larger tables were perfect height for working. This meant the space was great for both socializing and working.

As for the menu, in the past I’ve had the salted hot chocolate and a cookie. Both were really tasty, especially the cookie which had delicious chunks of lotus biscuit and raspberry chocolate. This time however I had the salted chocolate iced. The salted chocolate iced version had a deep chocolate flavour rather than sweet. It was nicely balanced out with cream, so it wasn’t too bitter and was tasty.

Beonty Coffee is a unique café with an interesting cross between trendy café and American style diner. In dead beat terms it’s a space that takes the current trends and puts it’s own individual spin on it. It’s a chic space that is designed well and also has a delicious menu on offer. It’s a must visit for people with a keen design eye that need to work or play in the Beotigogae area.
