Circle Coffee: Itaewon

Winding through the back streets of Itaewon, you will find yourself looking at an old metal door, covered with a green sign reading rooftop café. It is here where you will find Circle Coffee.

To enter the café you must climb a dark narrow staircase. Once you reach the top however, you will be greeted with a small bright white space.

The café’s main colour scheme is white and with small accents of green and natural wood. All the surfaces are white (walls, ceiling, tables and chairs), with the table and chairs edges' a natural wood colour. The seating was a mix between long bar seats and small tables and stools. Due to this, the café was more suited to socialising, but at the same time since it was so quiet, it seemed like a nice place for doing a little work alone too.

The café had no real decorations, however this made it’s centre piece, the Seoul skyline, stand out even more. From one side of the café, through a large circular window, you could see the Hannamdong skyline, and on the opposite side of the café, a rectangular window looked out on the street below. The café also had a large skylight that let in beautiful light into the café.

But since the space was advertised as a rooftop cafe, my friend and I wanted to take advantage of it, so that's where we sat. Though we went on an overcast and incredibly humid day, the view of Hannamdong was worth it. And since we were higher than before, you could also see parts of the Han River though the buildings, and further to the south of Seoul.

For our drinks, I had a green tea latte and my friend had a dark chocolate latte. The green tea latte was tasty. It had a lovely strong but not bitter matcha flavour, and it’s sweetness was perfect. The dark chocolate latte also had a bold chocolate flavour and it also wasn’t too bitter, but the perfect balance. Also, both the drinks were cheap at 4,500 won, which is especially rare for Itaewon.

This was a café with a view. In dead beat terms, Circle Coffee is simple but delivers. It’s a good space for socialising with cheap and delicious drinks. It design is simple but all lead you to focus on it’s centre point, the city of Seoul itself.
