On a weekend trip to Busan, my friend and I headed to the east of Busan to Namgu, a hilly but quiet residential neighbourhood. Upon finding a deep red brick building we climbed to the second floor to come to the door of Complexity Coffee.
The café was a medium sized café that was wide and open with a sea of green. The open space of the café had most corners with at least one plant in it, but usually more.
In interior had concrete floors and ceiling which were painted in a cream that had a slight green tinge, and had floors that were a polished concrete. The finishes of the café featured a lot of stainless steel. Storage and some tables were made of the shining metal, while the legs of most of the chairs and tables were made of the same material. Black was also another colour featured in the café and was seen on the tables and chairs.
These industrial finishes were balanced out with a warm toned wood from some of the chairs and the long ordering counter. However the most prominent colour of the space was green.
Hanging from the ceiling, on shelves and table tops, or even just in pots on the floor, there were a large variety of indoor plants in every shade of green. This beautiful greenery naturally added an organic feel to the space. While most of the decoration were the plants themselves there were also photograph posters throughout the café that featured natural subjects. There were a lot of water pictures that alongside some of the pots in the cafe added a beautiful aquamarine colour to the space.
Although we were in Busan the atmosphere and interior of the space reminded me of a café in Euljiro, in Seoul’s centre.
The seating was mostly circular tables with two or three chairs, with a few exceptions being bench seating along one wall of the café, a long table that reminded me of a science lab sink, and a sofa.
The seating was great for working but also nice for socializing. The atmosphere was also calm and quiet enough that it allowed for both. Also, being on the second floor, there were a lot of windows that let in natural light. This meant the space was great to take pictures.
In terms of the drinks, I got a milk tea, my friend got the plant ade and we shared a croffle with ice cream. The plant ade was an apple and green grape ade with green tea and chunks of coconut jelly. It was a unique drink with distinct flavour but it was sweet and fresh, perfect for summer. The milk tea was also well flavoured and had a lovely velvety texture.
The croffle was also delicious. The croffle came warm and was crispy on the outside but soft in the middle. It came with grapes as a garnish which I found didn’t quite match with the ice cream, but my friend enjoyed them all the same.
Despite the name Complexity Coffee is a peaceful café full of beautiful plants. In dead beat terms this is a plant lovers dream. If you’re in Busan and need to catch up on some work, have a quiet time with someone special, or just have some alone time, this is a great place to go. Not only are the deserts and beverages top quality, the space will offer you some healing time for sure.
