In the streets of Samgakji, a new hive of activity where once old buildings are getting a new life, there’s a café that stands out from the rest.
Jimmy Home is a small café that is an ode to Brit pop and mod and rocker culture. With almost wall to ceiling decorated with posters and paraphernalia, this is a café for lovers of British subculture.

The café’s colour scheme was relatively simple. The walls and ceiling of the café were concrete painted in a crisp white, while the floor was polished concrete. Some of the cabinetry and finishings on windows were painted a bluish grey. There was also timber incorporated into the space with the main counter and a bar seat along the window made of wood.

This simple colour scheme of the building allowed colour from the artwork and paraphernalia to be the centre piece of the café. Posters covered the walls. Bands like Oasis, Blur, The Who and Pulp were displayed alongside movie posters for Trainspotting. One wall also had a built-in shelf which was covered with old radios and sound systems from the 90s. There were also CDs, magazines and books all related to British subculture.

And although there was a lot of paraphernalia, the space didn’t seem cluttered. While it made me reminiscent of my own teenage bedroom as a music lover, it was done in a much more tastefully way. The space was carefully curated to be a lot, but not too much. It also meant that it was great for taking photos.

Most of the seating was for twos or threes, but there was also a long table and chair that could be for larger groups. The space was relatively cramped and noisy however there was just enough space between the tables to not be so claustrophobic. But, although the table height was good for working, since it was so busy, the space seemed a little hard to work in. So, this café was definitely just a place to socialise in.

Moving onto drinks, I got a hot chocolate while my friend got an iced americano. My friend said the americano was well brewed and had a nice smooth flavour. The hot chocolate came very hot, but once it cooled down had an even flavour so it was not too sweet, and not too savory.
Jimmy Home is a café that just seethes subculture. In dead beat terms for mods, rockers and brit pop lovers alike, this is the café for you. Even for those who aren’t fans, or are aware of the culture, it’s a well decorated space that has good drinks. If you’re in the Samgakji area it’s a must go to spot to take in British subculture.
