Back at the beginning of summer, my friend and I took a walk in the scorching afternoon sun in the area between Hongdae and Sinchon. Passing over the bridge that crosses the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail and up a small hill you will find Moritzplatz.

The café and shop is fronted with two large windows and grey brick walls. The cafe looks relatively dark from the outside. But upon entering the café, it is only then that you realise the windows are somewhat tinted. Inside the café is a light high-ceilinged space. The space, though sectioned off feels wide and open.

The walls and ceiling are concrete painted white and the floor is grey squares of polished concrete. From this, here is an industrial-ness to the space, however this is leveled out with décor. Warm tones from wooden furniture, cabinetry, rugs, lighting and even the addition of plants added a lovely comforting feeling to the space.

Other pops of bright colour come from posters and artwork, and goods on sale. In this, the iterior style is a mix between bohemian and mid century modern which makes for a chic but welcoming space.
The café has two floors, the first being where you order and where you can sit. However the second floor has more seating.

The first floor is much louder and seems the place to socialise. While the second floor is a lot more quiet and definitely more suited to people who came to work. Both floors had a variety of seating; mostly for one or two people but there were also tables that were for larger groups.

Since the café is also a shop, on each of the floors there were goods for sale. On the first floor there were home goods, and on the second there was fragrances, books and artwork.
On the second floor there is also a roasting room. If you recognise the name Moritplatz, but not for the café, it might be for their coffee which is available at other cafes such as Turn Down Service.

That brings us to what we ordered. I got the earl grey milk tea, my friend got an iced americano and we shared an egg tart and a canelé. Both the baked goods had strong egg flavour and the canele was spongy with a nice vanilla flavour. But the egg tart was the winner here; both it's pasty and filling were smooth and tasty.
For the drinks, my friend said the coffee had a nice flavour. But the most important thing was the milk tea. First off, it came in a can, which one makes for a great picture, but also shows that it’s been made in advanced. Tasting it, it had a rich strong tea flavour with the perfect level of sweetness to elevate the flavour. It also had a lovely velvety texture. It’s one of my absolute favourite milk teas in Seoul and this is one of the reasons I have kept coming back to this café over the years.
Moritzplatz is a beautiful space that is so multifaceted. In dead beat terms, it’s a café that suits a variety of purposes. It’s aesthetically pleasing with tasty snacks, a store and of course the best milk tea in Seoul. Whatever your purpose this is a place to come time and time again.
