In the trendy residential area between Sangsu and Hapjeong stations is a hot spot for cafes. One of the biggest in the area is called Mudaeruk.
Mudaeruk is a large multifaceted space. While in principle it’s a café, it also sells meals and even hosts events like flea markets or live shows. And this is yet another café on this blog that I frequent often.
One of the main reasons that I come back, is that it reminds me so much of Melbourne, and thus of home. From the interior to the atmosphere to the outdoor seating and even the fact you can get a meal, just feels so much like a café back home.
On this particular day my friend and I went on a rainy late spring evening. Since it was dark, the space had a moody feeling being dimly lit with warm yellow lighting inside the space. The interior is industrial with concrete floors and with much of the walls and ceiling painted white. Much of the decoration came from plants or industrial finishes like the beams and metal fixtures hanging from the ceiling.
Despite the little decoration, the large space didn’t feel empty. This was down to the amount of seating in the space. Most tables were square and rectangular tables perfect for working or eating. But there were also couches and other chairs around coffee tables for bigger groups more suited to socialising.
The café also had very good speaker system and often plays a lot of ambient techno style music. This gives the space a nice depth and calming atmosphere. This is why there are often a lot of people who come here to work. but was covered. It's mainly used as a smoking area however the space is beautifully decorated with posters and plants and is sometimes utilised for events. This is a go to spot to take Instagram pics.
The café also had very good speaker system and often plays ambient techno style music. This gives the space a nice depth and calming atmosphere. This is why there are often a lot of people who come here to work.
Moving on to the menu. The café offers a variety of lunch and dinner items. In the past I’ve had the barbecue chicken sandwich and oil pasta, however both were not well seasoned though cooked nicely.
This time my friend and I shared the fish and chips and basil pesto cream pasta. My friend also got a beer and I got a milk tea. This time the food was tasty. The fish and chips were the best; the fish had a lovely light batter and the chips were cooked well. They were also served with a well flavoured tartare sauce. The cream pasta was also well cooked and this time had a strong basil pesto flavour.
For drinks, I usually just get the milk tea. The iced milk tea is not bad with a nice tea flavour but no sweetness. However the hot milk tea version is very homestyle in that it is just tea bag tea and milk, and not really worth it. My friends say the coffee here is also so so but the beer is nice. So while the food and drinks are nothing special, the reason I come back for more is the atmosphere.
Mudaeruk is all about the vibe. In dead beat terms, it’s a multifaceted space that is also a hipster’s paradise. It’s style and layout is a nod to Melbourne style café and eatery culture. While it’s food and drinks are very homestyle and nothing to write home about, the atmosphere of the place is where it excels. And with it’s huge adaptability it’s a great space for just about any occasion.
