Tutorial: Sangsu

In the myriad of buildings just behind Sangsu station exit one, you’ll come across a white building. You can see the sign for Tutorial from the rear of the café, but the entrance is a little hard to find, in a little alleyway.

Once you finally find the entrance of the cafe, one of the first things that you notice about Tutorial is it’s white colour scheme. But this doesn’t mean that the space was boring.

Almost all the surfaces of the café were white, except for the floor, which was tiled with large grey tiles or on the upper step was grey floorboards. While the space was quite open, there were level changes and steps that added an intricacy and sectioning feel to the space.

In the main area of the café were a variety of seating types. There were seats along a large bar table, a large communal block seat, a few sets of tables and chairs and finally chairs that were cut out of the platform. These were a unique addition and added interest to the eye.

The space was decorated with a few plants here and there, however the main decorative point were graphics and text on the walls and even windows. They were simple line drawings of different sizes, however these were well placed so the space didn’t feel empty.

There was also a corner in the café that had a nice selection of records and other art goods for sale. This brought a nice pop of colour to the space. This also meant that the music selection was also good.

The sweet owner also had a cute little Jack Russel dog who was always running around the café. He had a white kennel inside the café that matched the interior of the café.

However there while most of the interior was white, there was one room painted an apple green colour and with dark chairs and tables. This was a surprising colour choice, especially since there were no other hits of that colour throughout the café. Although there were apple face graphics in black and white over one wall in the main area (which is a strange link, but is nonetheless there) this colour choice seemed a little out of place.

In the green side area had quite a lot of seating and would be good for working, where as the main outer area is more suited to socialising, though had some seats for working.

Outside there were also a few seats, however there were also two areas outside the café with mirrors and were well placed for taking photos.

As for the drinks, I got a green tea latte and my friend got an americano. Due to corona restrictions, we had to get take out. My green tea latte had a fair green tea flavour and was a little on the savory side, but wasn't bad. As for the coffee, my friend was able to choose between bitter or sour coffee, which isn’t something usually asked, so that was a nice touch. However he said that the coffee wasn’t band, but wasn't anything special either.

Tutorial is a nicely designed café. In dead beat terms it’s an open space with a minimalist aesthetic that is overall carried well throughout the café. While the drinks aren’t anything special, the space is a nice sit-down café with a nice atmosphere and service.
