Modular Coffee Bar: Huamdong

In an interesting spot, sandwiched between Namsan mountain and the Hilton Hotel in Seoul’s centre, is a little café with a bright red neon sign.

One morning a few months ago, my friend and I were in the area so we popped into Modular Coffee Bar for a quick morning pick me up.

The façade of the café had two large brick arches which is in front of two large windows, their frames painted in a deep navy blue.

Inside the café the walls and ceiling were white, while the floor was polished concrete. Decoration was simple, and came mostly in the form of furniture which were coloured in bright primary colours.

There was a large floor to ceiling mirror on one part of the wall in front of the ordering counter. This gave the illusion that the space was much bigger. It also reflected the nice view of a small park opposite the cafe, which was in a artwork itself. This natural element was also carried through into the café with plants here and there.

The space had tables for twos or fours. It had the atmosphere of being for both working and socialising. Also because of it’s location right at the top of a big hill, it gave off a feeling of being a place for locals to stop and chat with friends, or get some quick work done.

My friend got an iced americano and I got an iced milk tea. My friend said the coffee was ok and had a nice flavour. The milk tea was quite nice with a relatively nice tea flavour and the perfect amount of sweetness. It was also very reasonably priced at 4,500 won.

Modular Coffee Bar is a nice little hip café. In dead beats terms this is a café that seems very much like a spot for locals, but with the added bonus of a on trend interior. It’s well decorated and has nice drinks and while I wouldn’t travel for it, it’s worth the visit if you’re in the area and need a pick me up.
